Francis Moore was a writer, and later a commercial agent for the Royal African Company. Moore lived on the Gambia River from November 1730 to May 1735, and he represented the business interests of the company. This work consists of the personal diaries that Moore kept at the time and are still an important source of information on pre-colonial Gambia. Moore's diary includes discussions about natural history, a description of the various ethnic groups living along the river, daily notes and economic life. It also included accounts of the slave trade, and in particular the story of Ayuba Suleiman Diallo (known in Britain as Joob bin Sulaiman), the son of a Muslim cleric kidnapped as a slave, was freed in exchange for a ransom paid by the good people in London, and eventually returned to Africa. He accompanied Moore Diallo back to Senegal in 1734. In addition to Moore's notebook, the book includes the diaries of Captain Bartholomew Steps' journey up the Gambia River in 1723, and translations of a number of non-English sources on African geography, including the writings of nomads
